A brewfest? A wine fest? Who cares, a fest is a fest!

Festivals are such fun! The smells, the foods, the drinks, and the people (who are sometimes responsible for a portion of the smells…) Ahhhh, festival season… as children we love the fall fests, the Halloween fests, the fourth of July and other summer fests as well!
But as adults, (and you can be honest with us J) some of our favorite fests involve more adult beverages.

Enter: the beer and wine festivals.

DC has a brew fest every year, as does Lake Anna in a more southern county, and don’t even get me started on the various Oktoberfests. There is an Oktoberfest at Ft. Belvoir, one in Vienna, another in Martinsville, in Strasburg, and even an Oktoberfest dinner here at the Fort Myer O’Club!

This is one celebration we should send up mounds of frothy thanks to the Germans for sharing.

Then there are the wine festivals that are sprinkled around our area. There is the Yorktown Wine Festival, the Fall Wine Festival & Sunset Tour at Mount Vernon, and the Rock the Grapes Festival at Veramar. Wait…that last one sounds veeeerry familiar…

It is! Because we here at Family & MWR have championed a chariot to whisk us to the Shenandoah Valley this Saturday to enjoy the bounty of the harvest! People use that phrase for wine, right? Moving on.

Have you purchased your ticket to join us (this Saturday, October 3) as we meander aboard the air conditioned cabin of the bus, complete with a wine & cheese service?  Yes, that’s right! We’re serving our guests wine, cheese, and grapes on the way to the festival.
What better way to welcome autumn to our area than to sip wine and enjoy the changing leaves in the Shenandoah?  It’s going to be a beautiful, relaxing and memorable day trip.

Pray for no rain!

Fall didn't fall, it bounded!

I thought I’d finally figured out Virginia’s weather pattern. Oppressively hot summers, blaringly cold winters, and puffs of spring and fall. Then today’s unnecessarily chilly temperatures greeted me as I left home. I was under the impression that fall gradually, even gently, made its way in for the season- not stampeding in like a herd of moose!

I was, apparently, wrong. On both accounts. I have neither figured out Virginia’s weather pattern nor does fall gently dance in atop a big, fluffy cloud.

One day we are outside breaking down the summer activities, having to take breaks to bring out body temperatures down from the borderline deadly levels, and bam! The next day it’s hoodies and gloves.

Now, I’m not complaining about the cooler temperatures. I truly do love fall; it is, hands down my favorite season.

I just wish we had a gentler transition between the two.

But now that autumn has made her way back to us, it’s time to embrace the season and all of its festivities!

It’s time for Oktoberfests, wine fests, and beer fests! It’s time to wiggle into jeans and leggings and slip into Uggs and boots. Of course, the Uggs reference is mainly for the ladies, though if you gentlemen feel the need to embrace your inner femininity far be it for us to criticize!

It’s time for pumpkin spiced everything! It’s time for cinnamon smells and bonfires…snuggies, cozy socks, homemade soup, and trees that glow with red and gold leaves!

Until next year, adieu, summertime! Adios and vaya con dios, warmer weather!

Since so many people are adoring fans of autumn, Family & MWR plans autumn activities for those in the JBM-HH community to enjoy! Visit our website for up-to-date information on all of the “happenin’s!”

Don’t be crabby, there’s still a whale of a summer left to be had!

It’s August, woe is me! Summer is coming to a close! Bring out the jackets, unpack the sweaters, it’s time for Pumpkin flavored everything and Ugg boots as far as the eye can see! Snow shovels front and center, it’s time to dig! Now where did we pack those beanies again?

Alright, alright. Stop overreacting. It’s August, not October. There is plenty of summer left to enjoy. The weather forecast is predicting hot days with the welcome of slightly cooler nights. What more perfection could we possibly demand than that?

We still have plenty of weekends to stroll through the parks, take the boat out for a cruise, or visit that water park and pretend we’re a bunch of ten year olds once more! I mean, picture it: swimsuit on, tube properly inflated, yelling “weee!” as you race down the slides… It’s hard to be Debbie Downer with a tube around your torso. But I digress.

All things considered, this summer has been quite lovely- aside from June’s rainy temper-tantrums. Hanging out at the Myer Officers’ Club swimming pools, the 4th of July Red, White & Cruise along the Potomac River to watch the fireworks, and Twilight Tattoo.  These are just a couple of events we’ve had around Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall. So what else can you squeeze in before summer ends?

For starters, you could don your finest bib and “dive in” to the O’ Club’s Shrimp and Crab fest every last Saturday of the month. What’s more summery than a plate full of crab legs, Old Bay shrimp, and potato salad? Pair that with a pitcher of beer to wash down the delicacies and you’ve got yourself a tasty summer night! Not much of an outdoorsy person by chance? No worries, no one has ever been sunburnt in a bowling alley- that’s a fact! So cool your heels and bowl a hot game or two while those crazy sun-worshippers toast their hides. If you prefer a more rhythmic show of skill, you can join us for Stress Free Friday’s at Spates Community Club.  We party there every last Friday of the month from 6 top 9 pm.

See? There is still PLENTY of summer fun to be had! Old Man Winter will just have to take a seat and let us revel in the remaining warmth of our August days and nights. I can just feel the disappointment for all you winter weather lovers who are chomping at the bit to clear sidewalks once more…

Kids' Summer in DC

There’s nothing like waking up to a garbage truck, collecting your neighbors’ dinner from last night. Or the sound of two alley cats fighting over the last drink of milk that the little old lady left on her back porch. How about walking onto your front stoop to dream of becoming a construction worker as you stare down the street at the new community sports field that will be opening in just MONTHS! Of course you love playing baseball in the street, but OH NO! Ms. Simmons can’t have another window shattered, so the field might not be such a bad idea.

Even all of the noise we make playing baseball can’t cover up the sweetest summer sound EVER!  Your ears began to pick up a yummy tune, it’s getting closer! You know that sound very well. YES, the ice cream truck! All of a sudden you’re almost trampled by a swarm of friends, rushing to be the first in line. “I’ll take a bomb pop!” says little Johnny, the friend who takes pride in not getting a single ounce of icy goodness on his Redskins Jersey.

With Bomb Pop in hand, you walk a few blocks to Potomac Park. Hains Point is the best part! Too bad The Awakening sculpture isn’t there anymore. It was always a blast climbing all over the buried old man who was trying to escape from the deep sand. “Watch out, Johnny!” we all scream as the city bus makes a complete stop for us to cross at the crosswalk. Yes, that ice cream must be awesome because little Johnny isn’t paying much attention to the street.

The park is filled with children all enjoying the nice summer air, but there are no swings available, so you go climb the monkey bars until it’s your turn. You finally get on the swing and as you’re pumping your legs for momentum, you feel the cool breeze blowing through your hair. Your head tilted back and your eyes are closed; there’s nothing better than flying on a swing! It’s time to head back to your neighborhood, but your friends decide to stop at the convenience store for snacks.  The homeless man stops us.  “Excuse me kids, would you happen to have some change?” Of course mom taught you to help others, so you reach down into your pocket only to find a rubber band and 62 cents, but the homeless man is appreciative. You hand him 52 cents and keep just enough to get a few pieces of penny candy. Mmmm… the taste of banana fruities and the joy of helping someone less fortunate, on top of being with friends is quite alright!

Football season is almost here! Your dad is the coolest; he bought Redskins tickets for you and all of your friends, and you’re just counting down the days until the big game! But until then, mom and dad are taking you on the metro today! “See you later, guys,” you yell to your friends as you’re waving goodbye! With one hand clutched to the end of mom’s t-shirt, and the other holding on tightly to dad’s hand, you cross the busy street in enough time before the crosswalk timer counts down to “0”. Safely across the street, you and your parents continue to walk two more blocks before you arrive at the Smithsonian metro station.

“Wow, look at that huge pencil,” you say with excitement! “Sweetie, that’s the Washington Monument,” your mom replies with laughter. Before going into the station, your mom spots a florist stand. “WAIT, I’d like to stop here first.” Hmmm… what does mom need flowers for? Well down you go into the train station. People to your left, people to your right, people with bicycles, people in wheelchairs, people with children, people everywhere.   …but it is summer in the Nation’s Capital!

Of course your parents know exactly where to go, but you are totally confused. “If only I had a map, and actually knew how to read it,” you mumble to yourself. Well no need because here comes the train. “Welcome aboard the Blue line train to Franconia Springfield,” says the train operator. After passing through stations like Federal Triangle and Metro Center, you finally arrive at the historic Arlington National Cemetery. Mom’s father was a war veteran; he was such a brave man. Mom places the flowers onto his tomb. Ahhhh now the flowers makes sense. You’re very proud to have a grandpa who served your country. At that very moment, you can absolutely picture yourself as a soldier!

Now it’s time to ride the train back home. Before getting back onto the blue line, dad stops to get the family hot dogs from the snack stand. As you’re headed back home, you realize you don’t want to go, but it’s getting late.

It’s 8 pm by the time you step onto your front porch. The streets are quiet, but you can still hear cars passing by on the busy street a block away. You get into bed with your favorite book, and dad reads a few pages. Before you know it, you’re off to dream land. Pretty busy day for a city kid! Well it’s about to start all over again because here comes that garbage truck!
